An educator from North Carolina in the name of James Henry Roper founded the Gainesville Academy in 1858. He offered his land as well as the Gainesville Academy to the State of Florida for the permission of the relocation of the East Florida Seminary to the town.

After realizing the importance of research and teaching exhibits, the Florida Museum of Natural History joined UF in 1906. The museum's goal is to conserve cultural heritage and biological diversity through understanding and interpreting them. Up to present these efforts are still continuing through the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity which was established in 2000.
In 1909, Albert Murphree, who was then the university president, organized the colleges with one mission and led to the growth in enrollment numbers. He was also one of the pioneers of the Florida Blue Key leadership society with the purpose to instill leadership and service among the university students.

John J. Tigert established the grant-in-aid scholarship program for university athletes in 1928. It is what inspired the current athletic scholarship program the NCAA has at present.
The year 1956 marks a historic event for the University of Florida when the Colleges of Nursing and Medicine opens. Shortly after that, the UF Teaching Hospital was founded in 1958. The University became a leader when it comes to academic medicine because they are the only institution with six health-related colleges on one campus. Due to favor asked by football head coach of Florida Gators, some of the University scientists created a drink that can help athletes stay hydrated in their games. In 1965, they developed the beverage now called Gator-Aid. The football team had their first win in the Orange Bowl and thanked the breakthrough drink for it. |

Three years after that, the Dance Marathon was created. It became one of the first dance marathon programs in the nation. Since its establishment, it has collected more than 10 million dollars for its beneficiaries at UF Health Shands Children's Hospital.
