Types of Pruning

The type of pruning required for your tree depends on various elements such as the reason for pruning, the type and size of the tree and its health. Pruning needs an arborist climbing up the tree to cut down branches and limbs.

Arborists know what part and how to cut the tree to maintain its appearance and welfare. Some types of pruning are the following:
  • Crown Cleaning- Crown cleaning is the elimination of dying, dead, or diseased limbs and branches at the crown of the tree. It will help restore the tree's health as well as bring back its proportion.
  • Thinning- Thinning is the process of pruning branches to lessen crowding of branches in the canopy of the tree. It opens the foliage of the tree allowing light and air to enter the tree. Also, it decreases the limb's weight and helps keep the tree's shape.
It is also ideal to prevent the tree from being hazardous during inclement weather and strong winds. This is because air can pass through the leaves and will lessen the impact of the wind on the tree.
  • Raising- Raising is eliminating the branches in the lower area of the tree. By doing this, the canopy is raised. This is ideal to clear view for buildings, pedestrians, and running vehicles.
  • Reduction- This type of pruning aims to decrease the size of a tree. It is typically done to clear the way for power lines. The reduction is far from topping which is not good for the tree. Reduction maintains the health, form, and foundational strength of the tree.

When to Prune

Pruning can be done regularly or when your tree is posing a threat to your property and safety. It is mostly done to get rid of diseased, weak, or dead branches and limbs. Regular pruning will benefit your tree because the arborist can also inspect the health of the tree while doing the task.

Other types of pruning such as structural pruning are ideal during the dormant season of trees or when new buds start to grow. Insects and different kinds of pests don't usually foster during winter due to the cold. Therefore, the wounds brought by pruning heals easily and faster. Besides, pruning when the tree has not many leaves can help you see clearly.

However, there are exceptions to this because trees such as oak, ash, and hickory can be easily pruned even when leaves are in the way. Since it is hard to tell between live and deadwood, it is better to prune in spring.
